Pediatric Stroke Disorder Blogs

Pediatric stroke occurs when blood flow to part of a child’s brain is blocked or a blood vessel bleeds. Stroke can affect newborns, infants, and older children.

Symptoms may include sudden weakness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, vision changes, loss of balance, or a severe headache. Some children may also have seizures or changes in alertness.

A suspected stroke requires immediate medical assessment. Doctors may use brain imaging, blood tests, and other investigations to identify the type and possible cause. Treatment depends on the child’s condition and may include medicines, procedures, surgery, or rehabilitation.

Read the American Stroke Association guide to stroke in children to learn more about warning signs, diagnosis, and treatment.

If your child suddenly develops possible stroke symptoms, seek emergency medical care immediately. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
